Putzmeister America, Inc. is partnering with Cat®, to boost the power of Putzmeister America’s BSA 14000 trailer pump.

A BSA 14000 is used on Trump Tower Chicago to pump 125,000 cubic yards of concrete.

Three BSA 14000s are on the Burj Dubai job site in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

Cat® engine powers Putzmeister America BSA 14000

STURTEVANT, WI (February 1, 2008) – Putzmeister America, Inc. is partnering with Cat®, the world's leading manufacturer of construction and mining equipment, diesel and natural gas engines and industrial gas turbines, to boost the power of Putzmeister America’s BSA 14000 trailer pump, the most powerful trailer-mounted concrete pump in the world.

The Peoria, Illinois-based manufacturer’s robust 630 hp (470kW) Cat C18 ACERT™ engine is replacing the BSA 14000’s previous engine, a Cat C16, to provide almost 30 percent more horsepower, at 2,100 rpm, to pump concrete at distances exceeding 1,700 feet (518m) vertically.

The BSA 14000 is ideal for high pressure concrete conveying over long vertical and horizontal distances for high-rise structures and tunnel construction. It can achieve pressures up to 3,190 psi (220 bar).

“When you pump concrete, two factors are critical; horsepower and pressure,” says Bill Carbeau, Putzmeister America’s director – special applications business. “Pumping concrete vertically is about five times more difficult than pumping it the same distance horizontally. Our BSA 14000 concrete pump is used in the most extreme conditions to achieve dramatic results in vertical and horizontal pumping.”

“As high-rise projects reach astounding new heights and tunneling projects around the world extend to even longer distances,” adds Carbeau, “the larger Cat engine will accommodate our customers’ needs for added power and easier pump strokes in handling today’s tough and unusual mixes such as self-compacting concrete and high strength concrete.”

The 22,365-pound (10,145kg) BSA 14000 is being used worldwide to build some of the world’s tallest and most impressive concrete structures and longest tunnels.

“The choice to power the BSA 14000 with a Cat engine wasn’t a difficult one,” according to Carbeau. “We’ve been using a Cat engine in this trailer pump since we introduced it 10 years ago. The pump has evolved, as have the engines that power it.”

A few examples of extreme high-rise projects BSA 14000 trailer pumps are on include the Trump International Hotel & Tower – Chicago (Trump Tower Chicago) and the Burj Dubai Tower in Dubai in the United Arab Emirates. Here is a quick snapshot of how the BSA 14000s come into play on each of these job sites:

Trump Tower Chicago:
•Will stand a soaring 92 stories high when completed in 2009.
•A total of 125,000 cubic yards (95,569 cubic meters) of concrete will be pumped with a Putzmeister BSA 14000.
•The BSA 14000 trailer pump is located in the basement of the structure where ready mix concrete trucks drive up and deliver concrete to the pump.
•The BSA 14000 pumps the concrete 250 feet (76m) horizontally via slick line and then 1,130 feet (344m) vertically (at the structure’s highest concrete level) to Putzmeister America’s 34/38Z-Meter Series II detach placing boom.

The Burj Dubai Tower:
•In early November 2007, a Putzmeister BSA 14000 SHP-D pump reached a concrete conveying height world record for the Burj Dubai – an astounding 1,971 feet (601m).
•Will be the tallest concrete building in the world and stand at an estimated 2,625 feet (800m)when completed in 2008.
•The building has a reinforced concrete structure up to the 156th level. Only the decks will be placed with concrete up to the 160th level – 2,004 feet (611m). The remainder of the floors will be constructed with steel.
•Two BSA 14000 SHP-D and one BSA 14000 HP-D trailer pump are located at one pump
station at an estimated 229 feet (70m) away from the center of the building tower.

“In a high-rise project you can have an entire truckload of concrete in the project’s delivery system alone,” explains Carbeau. “Every 200 feet (61m) represents a yard of concrete and the pumps simply can’t afford downtime.

“Our customers want reliability and dependability, and that’s what we provide them with our heavy-duty pump and Cat engine. We’ve had great results with the Cat engines with ACERT Technology. The worldwide network of Cat dealers, including our dealer Zeppelin Baumaschinen, has also been an asset.”
