Latin America’s “Paradise” Experiencing High-Rise Construction Boom
Latin America’s “Paradise” Experiencing High-Rise Construction BoomPutzmeister America, Inc. optimizes concrete pumping and placement for Trump Ocean Club International Hotel & Tower – Panama®
STURTEVANT, WI (November 3, 2008) – Billed by the media as Latin America’s new Miami Beach, Panama is in the midst of unparalleled expansion in its economy, most notably in high-rise condominium construction. Baby boomers from the United States seeking the ideal retirement location are a primary reason for this growth.
As this Latin American “Paradise” continues its meteoric rise, so too has the use of Putzmeister America Inc.’s concrete and material placing systems on prominent projects like the Trump Ocean Club International Hotel & Tower – Panama® (Trump Ocean Club®) in Panama City. This 2.8-million square foot (260m2) development by NEWLAND INTERNATIONAL PROPERTIES, CORP. and general contractor OPCORP-ARSESA INTERNATIONAL INC. (OPCORP) is being constructed with concrete placing systems and support from Putzmeister America’s local distributor, Agregados y Concretos S.A. (Agreconsa).
“Putzmeister America being selected as the exclusive manufacturer to supply the high-rise concrete pumping and placing equipment is a special recognition of our expertise in high-rise construction,” says Marc Aguilar, Putzmeister America’s General Sales Manager for Latin America and the Caribbean. “It speaks volumes of the confidence contractors place in our team of experts for this type of construction and our equipment.”
Putzmeister’s concrete placing system for Trump Ocean Club® includes two Series II Detach Placing Booms – an MXR 34/38Z and an MXR 24/28Z; three pin towers with Hydraulic Self Climbing systems; and a BSA 2110 HP-D and BSA 1409 D trailer pump.
World, Meet Panama
Since gaining control of the Panama Canal from the United States in 1999, the very stable Panamanian government has seen the Canal’s overall traffic increase by more than one-third, while the number of containers used to package electronics, textiles and other factory products transported across Panama has nearly tripled.
The most significant evidence of Panama’s recent economic explosion is in the construction sector where developers and investors from around the world have quickly latched on to the promise of the country’s real estate market. The root for this massive interest in the country is the US$5.2 million Panama Canal expansion that started in late 2007, completion is expected in 2014 or 2015. This expansion will double the canal’s capacity for larger ships and is expected to lead the country to an economy worth US$12 billion.
Due to a lower cost of living, lower cost of healthcare, short distance from the U.S. mainland, tropical climate and stable political environment, Panama is an investment many U.S. baby boomers are finding difficult to pass up.
Panama has a population of about 3.2 million people and 127 high-rise buildings already dotting the city’s landscape. In addition, more than 110 high-rise buildings are currently under construction.
“Live, Work and Play All Under the Same Roof”
Soaring to an impressive 971 feet (296m) high when complete, the 66-story Trump Ocean Club® will be the largest residential real estate property and one of the tallest buildings constructed in Latin America.
Located in the Punta Pacifica Peninsula, Trump Ocean Club® is made up of three major sections including, condominium residences, hotel condominiums and bay lofts.
“Panamanian and Colombian developers joined efforts to involve The Trump® Organization for Panama’s first mega hotel and condo development,” comments Ing. Jenaro Echeverri OPCORP. “Trump Ocean Club® is destined to change the landscape and redefine the real estate business in Panama. This is the first project involving the Trump® trademark in Latin America. It will bring in more than US $250 million (construction cost only) of investment into Panama, which means an increase in employment, development and tourism opportunities, amongst others, for the country.”
From the groundbreaking for Trump Ocean Club® in May 2008 to early September 2008, 42,000 cubic yards (30,000m3) of the total 165,000 cubic yards (120,000m3) of concrete has been pumped and placed for Trump Ocean Club®.
A Panamanian company established initially for the purpose of building the Trump Ocean Club®, OPCORP is a three-year-old company with more than 20 years of experience as a construction team. OPCORP contacted Putzmeister America because they know the advantages of owning this respected and reliable concrete placing equipment.
“Putzmeister was very active in the review, design, delivery and installation of the concrete pumping and placing equipment for Trump Ocean Club®,” comments Aguilar.
“The project required close analysis of the concrete placement and to look for ways to optimize placement while reducing time and costs,” Aguilar continues. “The unique shape of the building, and the scheduled advancement of the individual floors made selecting the right equipment critical. Together, with our Special Applications Division, we sat down with OPCORP and listened to what they wanted to do. This allowed us to customize the system to help them complete the job on time and at an overall lower cost.”
“Putzmeister presented the most viable and highly cost-effective method possible to place concrete on Trump Ocean Club® to OPCORP,” adds Bill Carbeau, Director – Special Applications Business for Putzmeister America. “From estimating, planning and engineering of the system to concrete composition advice, employee training, technical support, parts and service, Putzmeister has been involved since the very beginning.”
“Throughout the entire process, Putzmeister has displayed its 110 percent commitment to us,” notes Echeverri. “Their customer support and expertise is second to none.
“Having Putzmeister America’s advanced Multi-Z placing booms and pumping systems on site is a huge advantage,” says Echeverri. “The 24/28Z has an impressive 78' 1" (23.80m) horizontal and 85' 3" vertical reach, while the 34/38Z reaches a remarkable 108' 7" (33.10m) horizontally and 116' 4" (35.47m) vertically. These capabilities allow us to place the concrete exactly where we need it.”
The innovative Hydraulic Self Climbing technology used with the pin tower means that cranes are not needed to climb the pin towers. Instead, two lift cylinders and the boom’s hydraulics lift the tower effortlessly, freeing up the cranes for other project tasks.
“We’ve been flying one of the two placing booms to the third pin tower on the site,” Echeverri adds. “We’re so pleased with the ease of concrete placement and ability to achieve cost savings that we purchased a third placing boom and it will soon be in use on site.”
To get the concrete to the placing booms smoothly and reliably, the BSA 1409 D’s Turbo 188 hp (140kW) Deutz engine pushes the concrete through concrete delivery line at an impressive rate of 119 yd3/hr (91m3/hr), and the BSA’s 2110 HP-D’s Turbo 443 hp (330kW) at 133 yd3/hr (102m3/hr).
“Putzmeister America delivers a complete concrete placing program from before a project breaks ground through the topping off ceremony,” notes Carbeau. “No one else offers this caliber of customer-centric support. For the Trump Ocean Club®, we specified the sizes of placing booms and concrete pumps needed as well as the right towers and delivery line. Next, we identified the ideal locations for the three placing boom towers, delivery line and concrete pumps to best service the job. As the project has progressed, Putzmeister America and Agreconsa consulted on installation and addressed various needs as the project has progressed."
Peter Mamopulakos, owner of Agreconsa, started his company Elevadores y Bombedoras C.A. (Elebomca) in Venezuela 10 years ago and established a presence in Panama five years ago, due to the high-rise condominium boom.
“When working with Putzmeister, we feel they are focused on our specific needs, and only ours,” notes Mamopulakos.
“We recently took over a new facility that has offices and service facilities for the equipment we sell,” notes Mamopulakos. “In addition to selling large line Putzmeister equipment (boom pumps, high pressure trailer pumps and placing booms), we also stock Thom-Katt® trailer pumps and parts for immediate service. We also sell material and delivery line as well as tower.”
“Agreconsa is a progressive and well respected distributor that takes great pride in the sale and service of Putzmeister equipment,” says Aguilar. “They have made a commitment to Panama with their new facility and work together with Putzmeister America to provide exactly what customers need.”
Trump Ocean Club® is slated for completion in August 2010.
Over the last 10 plus years in Latin America and the Caribbean there has been a new construction tendency to pump taller buildings. All of the tallest buildings in Latin America were pumped with Putzmeister concrete pumps, including:
•Torre Caney at 361 feet (110 meters) - Dominica Republic
•Torre Mayor at 738 feet (225 meters) - Mexico
•CENCOSUD at 1,083 feet and 723 feet (330 meters and 220 meters) - Chile
“Putzmeister's pumps and experts are always looking for the next challenge in Latin America and the Caribbean,” adds Aguilar. “The high-rise construction explosion has contributed the increased demand for Putzmeister concrete pumping equipment.”
